Some Recent Results
Follow-up spectroscopic measurements of 3 newly discovered brown dwarf candidates from the Backyard Worlds citizen science project revealed that these objects are likely binaries, which are quite rare in the substellar regime. Read the AAS Nova feature.
Using photometry and astrometry from the USNO-led UKIRT Hemisphere Survey (UHS), we characterized the known population of brown dwarfs in the UHS footprint. Of the ~1000 objects analyzed, our UHS measured proper motions were the best ever measured for ~50% of this sample (read more).
Volunteers from the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen project have helped to discover a brown dwarf with the reddest colors amongst free-floating substellar objects. It also shows signs of methane in it's atmosphere, unique amongst such young, red objects, and may also be variable! Read more about the discovery in this NASA feature.
My Research
Citizen Science with BackyardWorlds
In an effort to further fill out the census of stars and brown dwarfs in the solar neighborhood, I co-founded the citizen science project BackyardWorlds.org. The first new brown dwarf was found just 6 days after the project launched, and was published with several citizen scientist co-authors (read more). Additional discoveries include dusty white dwarfs, brown dwarf binaries, extreme subdwarfs, planetary mass brown dwarfs, and numerous others. You could be the next person to make a big discovery, so head on over to BackyardWorlds.org to join the fun!
Completing the Census of the Solar Neighborhood
Nearby objects can serve as vital benchmarks for many areas of astrophysics. Multi-epoch data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) have enabled the first all-sky motion searches using solely mid-infrared wavelengths, ideal for identifying nearby low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. I am using data from the primary WISE mission (see here and here) as well as the recently reactived WISE mission, NEOWISE (see here and here) to identify previously overlooked members of the Solar neighborhood. Discoveries include an assortment of previously unknown L and T dwarfs, several M dwarfs within 10 pc, and a plethora of low-metallictiy, late-type subdwarfs.
UV Environments of Low-mass Stars
M dwarfs are the most abundant stellar constituents in the Galaxy, and recent results from the Kepler space telescope indicate that almost all M dwarfs host planets, many of which are in the habitable zones of their host stars. However, increased activitly levels around such stars can drastically affect the atmospheres of any planets orbiting around them. I use ultraviolet observations from facilities such as the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) (read more) and the Hubble Space Telescope (read more) To understand the high-energy environments of such stars and how they may affect potentially habitable exoplanets.
Young, Nearby Brown Dwarfs
Young, late-type brown dwarfs show many notable spectroscopic and photometric similarities to young, direcly-imaged exoplanets. Using a new technique based on the unique near- and mid- infrared colors of these objects, I identified WISEA 1147-2040, a new member of the 10 million year old TW Hya Association. With an estimated mass around 5 times that of Jupiter, WISEA 1147-2040 is one of the youngest, lowest-mass brown dwarfs yet discoverd in the Solar neighborhood (read more). The full survey resulted in the discovery of 47 other previously unknown L dwarfs, including several likely members of the Beta Pic AB Dor, Tuc-Hor, and the Hyades. (read more).
